These technologies include most notably, virtual reality and augmented reality, and also other lesser-known modalities like diminished reality. The ongoing global transition to digital has determined the increasing adoption of these visualization and interaction technologies in the construction industry. Examples of applications of such technologies can be found for domains extending from design and planning to construction and operation. Some of the most mature applications of XR to the construction industry can be found in the structural health monitoring (SHM) field. This maturity results from the tangible advantages of performance, precision, and convenience, among others, that XR technologies have been proven to bring to this area. The use of such technologies, however, is not without important challenges, which must be taken into account when researching and developing applications. In this chapter, we analyze how the different modalities of XR are being applied in the context of the distinct areas of SHM. A specific case study of the application of these technologies to dam safety control is also described. In that scope, a set of guidelines is presented to assist researchers and domain experts in implementing such solutions. Finally, a reflection on the future of XR in SHM is carried out.} }

It entails interpreting vast amounts of data from sensor networks integrated into dam structures. The application of extended reality technologies for situated immersive analysis allows data to be contextualized directly over the physical referent. Such types of visual contextualization have been known to improve analytical reasoning and decision making. This study presents DamVR, a virtual reality tool for off-site, proxied situated structural sensor data visualization. In addition to describing the tool&rsquo;s features, it evaluates usability and usefulness with a group of 22 domain experts. It also compares its performance with an existing augmented reality tool for the on-site, immediate situated visualization of structural data. Participant responses to a survey reflect a positive assessment of the proxied situated approach&rsquo;s usability and usefulness. This approach shows a decrease in performance (task completion time and errors) for more complex tasks but no significant differences in user experience scores when compared to the immediate situated approach. The findings indicate that while results may depend strongly on factors such as the realism of the virtual environment, the immediate physical referent offered some advantages over the proxied one in the contextualization of data.}, DOI = {10.3390/computers13020035} }
